Eileen Ruth Dicke was born February 1, 1921, to Herman and Lucia (Michelsen) Hillen on the family farm near Leigh, Nebraska. She attended rural elementary school and graduated from Leigh School as valedictorian of her class. She worked at the ASC office in Columbus before being united in marriage on October 10, 1940, to John Dicke in Hooper, Nebraska. They farmed all their lives in the Creston area.
Eileen was a life-long member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and enjoyed the Luther League activities during her teen years. Her favorite activities included ice skating, dancing at Welch's Hall, especially to the "Blue Skirt Waltz", tending a large garden, canning, sewing for her family, quilt making for missions, raising chickens, baking bread and award winning pies using a wood-burning stove during her earlier years. She took great pride in her "spick & span" clean farmhouse and beautiful garden and was known for never having a hair out of place (with the help of egg whites during the depression years, and that is no yolk).
