SCALES MOUND, Ill. -- Mrs. LaVerne (Dolores R. "Dolly") Holland, 92, of Scales Mound, died Sunday, July 17, 2011, at the Galena Stauss Senior Care Community.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 21, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Scales Mound, with the Rev. Chris Kuhn officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at Miller & Steinke Funeral Home, Scales Mound, where the parish rosary will be recited at 4 p.m.

She was born on Aug. 1, 1918, near Lancaster, Wis., daughter of Benedict and Gertrude (Udelhofen) Wilke.

She married LaVerne B. Holland on June 29, 1939, at St. Francis De Sales Church, Hazel Green, Wis.; he preceded her in death on June 5, 2004.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish, a former reading parent for Scales Mound School and a former member of the Jo Daviess County Home Extension.

She and her husband formerly farmed, and she was a former employee of "The Janlin Co." in Warren.

She loved to crochet and enjoyed crafts of all kinds. She especially enjoyed bingo and a good game of cards. She was formerly "Mrs. Santa Claus" for the Scales Mound Lions Club for many years.

Dolly was a kind, loving and supportive mother and grandmother.

Surviving are a son, Leo (Mary Ellen) Holland, of Southern Shores, N. C.; and a daughter, Margaret "Mitzi" (Erwin) Holtz, of Algonquin; two grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Holland-Hinton (Terry), of Norfolk, Va., and Brett Holland, of Ashburn, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Holland and Elizabeth and Michael Hinton; a sister, Dorothy VandeDrink, of Galena; and many nieces and nephews.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Catherine (George) LaMour; and in-laws, Raymond VandeDrink and Edmund (Dorothy) Holland.
