Mary C. Cash, 92, Pioneer, Dies Here

Funeral services for Mary Christina Cash, 92, were conducted from the local Lutheran church Saturday afternoon, with Mr. Harold Bailey in charge of the services.

She was born August 14, 1861 in Russia, and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in that country. At the age of 12 years, she came to America, settling in the State of Washington. Following the death of her first husband, she was married to John Conrad Cash in 1898. Her husband survives.

She and her husband moved to Montana in 1908 and settled at Chester, where they lived until 1917, when they moved to Saskatchewan, Canada. In 1936 they came back to Chester and have made their homes here ever since that time.

She was the mother of 17 children, including one set of twins, six of whom survive. There are 22 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Surviving children are Jacob Schafer of East Glacier; Mrs. Mary Oster, Spokane, Washington; Henry Cash. Medicine Hat, Canada; Mrs. I. L. (Susan) Newbury, Calgary, Alberta, Canada; William Cash, Yakima, Washington, Rose Cash, Chester.

She had been ill for the past two years and had spent some time in a hospital. She passed away June 25 at the Kennedy Deaconess hospital in Havre. Interment in the local I. O. O. F. Cemetery.

Maria Christina Stumpf was born August 14, 1861 in Warrenburg, Russia on the East side of the Volga River. At age 14, her parents, Carl Jacob Stumpf and Susanna Kiser Stumpf, decided the family would have a better life in the US. The sold all their possessions and traveled to Hamburg Germany. They boarded a ship named "Lessing" and sailed for America and a new life in 1876. Life for Maria was not to be easy. Her family went from New York to Lincoln, NE where they lived for six years. They moved through Utah, to Walla Walla, WA for a short time and then to Bickleton, WA.

In December, 1880, Maria married Jacob C. Schafer in Nebraska and by 1896 she was the mother of 10 children. The last five were born in Bickleton. Twins, Sara and Willie died at birth in 1873. In December 1896, when Mary Schafer was 4 months old, Maria's husband died of complications from lifting a wagon. In October 1897, Maria married John Conrad Cash who also had been born in Russia. Their first child Richard was born in 1898 and died at 4 months old. The diphtheria epidemic of 1899 took 5 of the oldest Schafer children. They were Henry 17, George 11, Emily 9, Elsie 7 and Phillip 5. Her 13th child Pearl Cash died at 8 months. Nine of Maria's children and 11 of her family members are buried here in the old ME Cemetery.

The family moved to Odessa, WA to Montana, Canada, and back to Chester, Montana where Maria lost her 17th child, Barbara. Maria lived to be 95 and her second husband John C. Cash lived to be 103. Her surviving children were Jake and Charlie Schafer, Mary Schafer Oster, Henry Cash, Susan Cash Newberry, William Cash and Rose Cash.
