Harley Wayne Whiteside, 88, of Bessemer City, died on July 17, 2011, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was born June 13, 1923 in Gaston County, to the late Hunter Wayne and Mary Oates Whiteside.
Harley was a dairy farmer and sat on the Board of Directors of the Farm Bureau in Gaston County. He was also an innovator in the dairy industry. Harley was a deacon and elder for over sixty years of Long Creek Presbyterian Church. He was also a clerk of session for many years of Long Creek Presbyterian Church. Harley was a United States Army Veteran Serving during World War II in the Medical Corp with the Tank Destroyers in Germany.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Elva Guffey Whiteside; son Harley Gerald "Jerry" Whiteside and wife Sheila of Bessemer City; daughter Melva Whiteside Huffstetler and husband Roy, Jr. of Kings Mountain; grandchildren Jerry Wayne Whiteside, Mary Lena Whiteside, and Barrett Craig Huffstetler; great grandchildren Harley Wayne Whiteside, II, and Barrett Andrew Huffstetler.
Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday at Long Creek Presbyterian Church, Bessemer City, with Pastor Denise Liss officiating.
Visitation will be 6:00 – 8:00 PM Tuesday at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home.
Interment will be at Long Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Major Reid, Melvin Walker; his sister,
Mary Evelyn Whiteside Jarvis; his grandchildren Jennifer Louise Huffstetler, Roy Lee "Tripp" Huffstetler, III., and Christopher Harleigh Huffstetler.
