According to available records, Joseph King Jeffreys, a son of Enos and Martha (Elsey) Jeffreys, was 5'6" as an adult and employed as a coal miner. He enlisted in the US Army from 1 July 1898 as a Private to 28 February 1899 when he mustered out in Augusta, Georgia. He enlisted in Wheeling, WV from 26 Sept 1899 to 08 July 1901 when he mustered out at the Military Presidio in San Francisco, CA. In the 1900 US Census, Joseph K. Jeffries of West Virginia is living in military quarters in the Philippines. In 1903, Joseph married Edith M. Everly and they were living in Preston County, WV and had at least 4 children by 1912. In 1914, Edith, diagnosed with schizophrenia, was consigned to the Weston State Hospital, where she resided for 43 years until her death in 1957. In 1924, Joseph K. Jeffreys was first admitted to a National Home for Disabled Veteran's with "an old injury to the lumbar spine . . ." (there is a record of involvement in a mining accident in 1908) and he resided in Veteran Homes in Napa and Los Angeles, California. At the time of his death, he was residing in a motel in Stockton, CA.
