WILLIAMS - Frances Elizabeth Williams (nee Neis) passed away on July 19, 1997 at the Sarcee Auxiliary Hospital. Frances was born March 2, 1905 on the family farm near Lamerton, AB (Mirror), the daughter of Valentine and Julia Neis, and sister to Annie. Frances moved to Calgary in 1941, after living in Bashaw for some time, with her husband Bert E. Williams and their four children. They settled in West Calgary on 37 Street S.W., which at that time was little more than open prairie. Frances will be remembered as a loving, caring person, and for her passion of afternoon tea. Frances is survived by her sons, Cliff (Rachel) and Lawrence (Mary); and her daughter Mildred Sherk; as well as her nine grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren; and also, by two special nieces, Dory (George) Magnus and Betty (Vern) Leonard, and their children. Frances was predeceased by her parents, sister and husband, as well as her daughter Irene Sauve. The family extends their gratitude to the staff on the Second Floor of the Sarcee Auxiliary Hospital for their kindness given during her long stay. Funeral Services will be held at FOSTER'S FUNERAL HOMES "Garden Chapel", 3220 - 4 Street N.W. on Thursday, July 24, 1997 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Eric Long officiating. Interment to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Alberta, 218A, 2323 - 32 Avenue N.E., Calgary, AB T2E 6Z3. Just to clarify that Frances Elizabeth and Annie Mary Neis' parents were Valentine (Vanentyna) Neis 1846-1940 and the much younger Julia Kristian 1883-1971. They were married on 29 Jun 1898.

From the "Roots & Birth of Mirror 1870-1930",
by Mirror and District Museum; Item 26 - Neis family
Excerpt: Valentine staked his claim SE 4-41-22, close to Lamerton in 1890, moving there permanently in 1891. In 1895, he helped build St. Monica's church, and he met his wife, Julia Kristian a few years later. They were married on June 29, 1898. Jim Cairns, in his story of Valentine, says that Mr. Neis also owned land in Calgary in 1890, and that the old log building he put on this land ended up being a second hand store, and the only log building on 8th Avenue.
