He was the son of Byron B. Brooks, Sr. and Adaline Hirth. His parents were married on March 30, 1914 in Fernandina as that was Adaline's hometown. Byron Sr. had served in WWI. The family moved to Jacksonville by the time Bryon, Jr. was born.

Byron Brooks Jr. was listed on the Nassau County War Memorial along with other hometown heroes. He served in the US Navy in WWII and was KIA. His vessel left California September 19, 1942. He was killed in a non-combat air craft accident.

The War Memorial is located at the end of Centre Street in Fernandina Beach, FL...."they were so much more than names craved in granite".
