Daniel Jermome Erzar, 50, of Ely died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at home with his family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Ely on Oct. 14, 1952, the third of five children, to William J. and Margaret Ruth (Kobe) Erzar.

A lifelong resident of Ely, Dan graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1971 and from St. Cloud State University in 1980. In 1984 he purchased Lees Candy Service from his former employers, Lee and Vicky Montgomery, and owned and operated the business as Erzar Candy and Supply. He also owned and operated the Ely Car Wash. He also was a salesman for Sunny Hill Distributors for several years.

He was a member of St. Anthonys Catholic Church, where he participated in the church choir, pastoral council and was a cantor. He belonged to St. Josephs KSKJ Lodge 112, Northern Lakes Arts Association, Sons of the American Legion, Ely Chamber of Commerce, Ely Golf Club and sponsored a team and bowled in the Ely Mens Bowling League.

He was a member of the Ely Klown Band, Ely Harmonizers and participated in many roles in Ely Community Theatre, including the lead as Curly in Oklahoma. He also sang and played drums in the rock and roll band Drive It Like You Stole It. He had a beautiful tenor voice and always sang from the heart. He sang at many weddings, funerals and community events. Music and theater were his passion.

He is survived by his brothers, Bill (Debbie) of Ely and Jim (Connie) of Grand Rapids; and sisters, Becky (George) Ewinski and Anne Folz, both of Ely.

Dan was known as Uncle Dan the Candy Man to his eleven nieces and nephews, including Eddie and Chris Erzar of Ely, Kristen Erzar of Bloomington, Matthew, Tyler and Maija Erzar of Grand Rapids, Michael, Stephanie and Stephen Ewinski of Ely, and Jennifer and Alison Folz of Ely.

He also had many special relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William J. in December 1997 and Ruth Erzar in April 2003; and by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Frances Erzar and maternal grandparents, Matt and Mayme Kobe.
