DEATH OF ABRAM WELKER
Abraham Welker, aged 68 years, committed suicide, Monday evening at here five o'clock, by shooting himself with a shotgun. He had been in poor health for several months, at times suffering excruciating pain, and to relieve his sufferings he would resort to morphine. The taking of the drug became a habit, and he would often take large quantities. His family, realizing the danger, became alarmed, and made an effort to restrain the habit, refusing to administer the drug, but gave a medicine in its stead that had the effect of quieting him. For several weeks past it was noticed that is mind was becoming deranged, which was thought to be due to the constant use of morphine, and he had been refused the drug for several days past. Tuesday he appeared to be unusually calm. He ate heartily at dinner and appeared to eat well during the afternoon. At near five o'clock he left the house unobserved by his daughter, Mrs. George Rheinnegger. Her attention was attracted by the report of the gun, and with her daughter, hurried to investigate. They found Mr. Welker in the summer kitchen, which is a few steps from the main residence. He was sitting in a chair, with the gun, which had ben discharged, resting upon the floor, the muzzle of the gun pressed against the stomach. His clothing had caught fire, but was extinguished before the flames reached the flesh. He was yet breathing, but unconscious, and death came in a few minutes. Dr. Lamar was telephoned for, and upon arriving, seeing that life was extinct, telephoned the coroner at Richmond for permission to remove the body to a room in the residence.

Deputy Coroner Wampler arrived Wednesday morning and after an investigation gave the verdict of deliberate suicide, probably lay due to a period of mental aberration.

Mr. Welker had threatened suicide at various times during a year past. The shots Tuesday took effect in the stomach and bowels, and the lungs and heart were lacerated.

Several days previous to his terrible deed, he sent for Rev. Brown, of the M. E. church, and upon his arrival talked upon religious themes, and requested Rev. Brown to pray, which he did, Mr. Welker also offering a fervent prayer.

The funeral services are held at the hoe this afternoon, when Rev. Brown officiated. Mrs. W. H. Porter, Mrs. Ed Mason and Messrs. Frank Geisler and Mahlon Gebhart sang three selections.

Interment was made in West Lawn by the side of his wife, who died five years since.
