Maria Elisabeth Frilling was born in Oythe, Niedersachsen, Germany to John Bernard and Maria Gertrude (Ostman) Frilling. She arrived with her parents aboard the ship "Virginia" in Cincinnati on September 2, 1834. There, on May 5, 1836, she married Johann Bruns. They made their home in Maria Stein, Mercer County, Ohio.
