REIDSVILLE, N.C. Evelyn A. Balsley, of Reidsville, passed away Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at the Hospice Home of Rockingham Co.

Graveside services were conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2010, in Greenview Cemetery, with the Rev. John Burton officiating.

Evelyn was born Sept. 28, 1914, in Greensboro, N.C., and had lived all her life in Reidsville. During high school, she was captain of the Reidsville Girl's Basketball Team and led the team to win the State Championship in 1933. After graduation, she had a distinguished career as a Supervisor with Bell Telephone Co. in both Reidsville and Greensboro and retired with 50 years service. Evelyn was a lifetime member of the Main St. United Methodist Church. After her retirement, she was active in the Methodist Circle groups, making crafts for bazaars.

Evelyn loved flowers and felt close to the Lord in her garden. Many flowers and vegetables have been shared with her friends and neighbors. She also loved playing bridge and taught many of us to play the game.

Evelyn's parents and sister, Dorothy Balsley Snodgrass, preceded her in death.

She is survived by her niece, Dorothy Cox (Don), of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two great-nephews, Jeff McEvoy and wife, Karen, and Brian McEvoy; two great-great nephews, Jack and Brian McEvoy; and numerous cousins in Reidsville. Wonderful friends, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lasley, Priscilla Herndon and Mrs. Mary Anne Klenner Palmer, whose daughter, Evelyn (Lyn) Azwell, is Evelyn's namesake, have been a great support to Evelyn during her illness with calls, visits and letters. The family wishes to thank Dr. Hawkins, the staff of Annie Penn Hospital and Matt Smith for their care given to Evelyn during her illness.

Memorials may be made to Main St. United Methodist Church, 221 S. Main St., Reidsville, NC 27320.

Citty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.cittyfh.com.
