Mineral Point - Gerda Engels, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 13, 2011 at Upland Hills Hospital surrounded by family.

Gerda was born in Mineral Point on November 3, 1921 to Alfred and Kathryn (Klassy) Kruse. Following graduation from Mineral Point High School in 1939, and Business College in Madison, Gerda joined the war effort and worked for the War Department in Washington DC and at the US Embassy in London for the duration of World War II.

Returning to Mineral Point following the war, Gerda married the love of her life, Tom Engels on October 23, 1948. For the next 37 years she worked with her husband managing the operation of J.E. Engels Chevrolet Pontiac where she became a daily fixture at the "showroom". She remained actively involved in numerous activities and organizations throughout the community including Woman's Club, Ladies VFW Auxiliary, Mineral Point Ladies Quartette, Shake Rag Players, and the Mineral Point Madrigal. Upon the sale of the car dealership in 1985, Gerda and Tom spent the next 19 years living their dream of retirement, summering in Mineral Point and wintering in Tucson until Tom's passing in 2004. Gerda continued to winter in Tucson until 2010, after which she returned permanently to her home of 60 years on North Iowa Street in Mineral Point.

Gerda pursued life and all it had to offer with vigor, independence, and a strong sense of determination. Never content to stay home and watch life pass her by, Gerda took every opportunity to go everywhere, do anything, and volunteer where needed including serving as a docent at the Mineral Point Railroad Museum until the summer of 2010. Gerda's determination to "keep on going" was perhaps best demonstrated by her activities during the week preceding her death. These activities included weekly Monday evening dinner with "the gang", lunch and playing "Skip-Bo" at the Senior Center on Wednesday and enjoying afternoons at the Mineral Point Swimming Pool doing water aerobics. Gerda played the game of life until the end….and she won!

Gerda is survived by her five children, Tom Engels Jr. (Melody), Kathie Kelly (Tom), Susie Vandeloecht (the late Ken), Jon Engels (Sonya) and David Engels (Tari), five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Tom.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Ss. MARY & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH in Mineral Point. Fr, James Hinnen will officiate. Inurnment will be in St. Paul's Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 16, 2011 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the GORGEN FUNERAL HOME in Mineral Point and also on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at the church.
