Raymond Joseph Merz, passed away on August 6, 2011 at the age of 65. He was born in Auburn, Calif. on May 1, 1946 and resided there until 2009 when he relocated to Hot Springs, Arkansas. Ray attended Placer High School, Sierra College, CSU Chico and received his Masters degree in Public Administration from Golden Gate University. Ray devoted 36 years of service to Placer County beginning as an eligibility worker and most recently as Director of Health and Human Services from where he retired in 2004. Ray's passion was helping people and he demonstrated that in his career and community involvement including his work with Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Boys and Girls Club of Auburn and KidsFirst, formerly the Child Abuse Prevention Council of Placer County.
He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Janet Merz of Auburn, nieces Julie Woodruff and Janie Phillips of Sebastopol, Cindy Everson of Pleasanton, Jerri Ford of Citrus Heights and Jennifer Kline of El Dorado Hills. Raymond was preceded in death by his parents William and Hazel Merz of Auburn and his brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Suzanne Merz of Sebastopol.
His friends and family will gather at Chapel of the Hills on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 12 p.m. to celebrate his life. Graveside services at the New Auburn Cemetery to follow. Public viewing will take place at the funeral home from 5 to 8 p.m. on August 16, 2011. Memorial contributions may be made to Boys and Girls Club of Auburn or to KidsFirst. Arrangements under the direction of Chapel of the Hills.
