He was born in Chicago, IL to Hugo and Rose (Boehringer) Eger.
In 1940 Fred and his family moved to Skagit County and purchased Minkler's Bakery in Sedro Woolley. February 1943 he entered the Army and served in North Africa until he was injured, returning home in September 1943 when he was honorably discharged.
He was a member of the DAV, and American Legion.
Fred married Betty Forsgard on November 3, 1951 in Bellingham, WA. He worked with his father, Hugo, in Eger's Bakery until Hugo retired in 1960. Fred then went on to work for Dairy Valley in Mount Vernon and Burlington in the 1960's. He then worked for Bargreen's wholesale food company in Mount Vernon until his retirement in 1986. Fred loved supporting his children and grandchildren's sports and musical events. He will be remembered for his generous smile and witty conversation. He enjoyed everyone that he met.
Fred is survived by his wife of 58 years, Betty of Burlington; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Pam Eger of Burlington, Randall and Piper Eger of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Christopher and Mason Eger of Mount Vernon, Hannah and Sonja Eger of Burlington; nieces, Marge Dyer of Poulsbo, Caroline Barben and Barbara Brendle of Silverdale; great niece and nephews, Tonjia (Karl) Bier of Anaheim, CA, Neil Walker of Seattle and Paul Brendle of Seattle; great-great niece and nephew, Karina and Karl Bier.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents, Hugo and Rose Eger; sister, Elsie Barben; brother, Charles; niece, Betty Walker; nephew-in-law, Bob Dyer.
A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care of Kern Funeral Home of Mount Vernon.
