-A celebration of the life of Stephen John McCabe, 86, will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene. Military tribute will take place at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene.
-Mr. McCabe, who was born in Florence, S.D., died Friday.
-He graduated from Ursuline Academy in Moscow and then the University of Idaho and Gonzaga University in Spokane.
-He was an aerospace engineer at North American Aviation in California. One of his major accomplishments was working with the Apollo Space Program.
During World War II, Mr. McCabe was a B-17 ball turret gunner and flew his required 25 missions before returning home uninjured even after a bullet nearly missed him on his last flight.
-He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Air Medal with three oak clusters and a Distinguished Flying Cross.
-Mr. McCabe retired to Coeur d'Alene in 1974 and was a talented wood craftsman. He was a great storyteller and enjoyed the art of correspondence and had many pen pals.
Survivors include a brother, Phillip McCabe of Spokane; a sister, Patricia McCabe-Turner of Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
