Dr. Handy was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where he taught Sunday school and served on the Vestry. He was also a member of the American Dental Association, the Virginia State Dental Society, and the Piedmont Dental Society. He was a class one triple plus club member of the Pankey Institute for advanced dental education in Key Biscayne, Fla.
He attended Virginia Tech and pharmacy school before entering dental school at the Medical College of Virginia School of Dentistry; he practiced dentistry for more than 50 years. Dr. Handy was also a member of Boonsboro Country Club and had many interests outside of his profession. For several years he served on the state military affairs committee, and also served in the United States Navy Dental Corps in the Pacific during World War II.
Surviving are his wife Barbara of 59 years; two daughters, Martha H. Pollard and Quen H. Chaffin (Tom) and Dr. James A. Pollard, of Lynchburg; four grandchildren, James A. Pollard, Jr. (Amy), Thomas W. Chaffin (Allison), Beth P. Kendall (Jason), Kathryn C. Hendricksen (Mike); and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Douglas Q. Handy.
The family received friends from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at the residence, located at 196 Bishops Lane, Lynchburg.
A Service of Resurrection will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday), officiated by the Rev. Michael Sullivan and the Rev. Bill Parrish. A reception will follow in the Magill Hall. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Canterbury Fellowship Fund, 501 VES Road, Lynchburg, Va. 24503; St. John's Episcopal Church, P.O.
