Olof Persson is listed as a Statare. It means that he went around and worked as a hired hand for farmers in various places, which can be seen by the fact that his children were all born in different parishes. He owned no house, or land to farm, he worked for others. A difficult life for a family with small children. A "statare" usually contracted for a year with a farmer, and received food and a place to live. When the contract was up, they often had to move on.

In Minnesota, the family received good help from Hanna's brother David Nelson, who probably encouraged them to come to the area near the Otter Tail and Douglas County Line.

There is quite a good history of Olof and Hanna Pearson's family on page 510 of the Douglas County Album of the Ages, published abt. 1979 by the Douglas County Historical Society, MN. They have a copy.
