Kenneth J. Fredericks, 60, died December 31, 1988 in a Boulder, Colorado hospital following a 2-1/2 year battle with leukemia. Funeral services were held January 4, 1989 at the Twin Buttes, North Dakota School Auditorium, with Rev. Stephan Kranz officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Twin Buttes.

Ken was born October 15, 1928 to John and Catherine Fredericks. He spent the early years of his life on his parents' ranch along the Missouri River, on the Ft. Berthold Reservation. He was a member of 4-H and Boy Scouts. He graduated from Elbowoods High School in May 1946, and was a member of the basketball team while in high school.

He attended Bacone College and Oklahoma City University. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was a flight engineer, and received the Humane Action medal for his participation in the Berlin Airlift in the years following World War II. He graduated highest in his class from Jet Propulsion School, and received the rank of Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

He met Gisela M. Steinhofer in Weisbaden, Germany in 1951. After his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to the family ranching operation in North Dakota, and later began civil service work with the BIA's road maintenance and construction projects. In 1970, he completed the BIA's Dept. of Interior management interim program, and began working for the Health, Education and Welfare Office of Child Development as an analyst, reconstructing Head Start programs. He also continued his education, obtaining a Bachelors degree and pursuing graduate credit in Management through Central Michigan University.

He worked for the National Congress of American Indians - National Council on Indian Opportunities as Economic Development Director, and for the National Tribal Chairman's Association. Ken was also co-founder of the American Indian National Prayer Breakfast, and was a charter member of the American Indian National Bank.

Ken met Linda Storm DeFlyer in Washington, D. C. in 1971. They lived in Bowie & Upper Marlboro, Maryland from 1971-1978, and Vienna, Virginia from 1978-1984. Ken and Linda's daughters, Carla and Melanie, were born in 1976 and 1978.

From 1974 to 1984, Ken worked for the BIA in Washington, D.C. as Director of Trust Service. In June 1984, he transferred to Pine Ridge, South Dakota where he worked the final year of his career with the BIA, and retired on September 28, 1985. Ken and Linda moved to Boulder, Colorado upon his retirement, where he resided until his death.

Survivors include Linda Storm DeFlyer Fredericks, of Boulder; their two daughters, Carla Francine Fredericks, and Melanie "Molly" Ann Fredericks, both of Boulder; step-daughter, Andrea Dawn DeFlyer, of Boulder; his and Gisela's five sons, Paul, Kenneth ("Junior"), Lyndon, Hans and Jeb Fredericks, all of Twin Buttes, North Dakota; his mother, Catherine Fredericks; his brothers, Tom, Pete, Keith and John; and his sisters, Duveen Keene, Wilhelmina Stewart, Juanita Warden, and Betty Gress. He was preceded in death by his father, and a sister, Buddine.

Funeral arrangements were by Price-Gaganey-Ohm Funeral Home of Dickinson, North Dakota.
