Thomas died Tuesday at a Temple hospital.
He was born Nov. 13, 1943, in Toledo, Ohio, where he was reared and educated.
Thomas had lived in the Killeen area since 1977. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1982 as a sergeant first class. He was a veteran of Vietnam.
During his military service, Thomas was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Service Ribbon, Bronze Star with "V" device, Combat Infantryman Badge, Good Conduct Medal with silver loop, Presidential Service Badge, Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with "V" device, Republic of Vietnam Civil Actions Honor Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with four bronze service stars and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with palm.
Thomas had worked in civil service since 1984 and was active in the Fort Hood Theater Group. He was a member of St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Killeen.
Survivors include his wife, Evelynn Thomas of Killeen; four daughters, Merrideth Garrett of Dallas, Jennifer Hurt, Pamela Thomas and Michelle Thomas, all of Killeen; his mother, Naomi Thomas of Toledo, Ohio; his stepmother, Evelyn Thomas; and three grandchildren.
