H. A. Ode, Potter Dies
Henry A. Ode, 62, postmaster of Potter and a merchant and banker there many years, died at Providence hospital in Kansas City, Kas., at 1:55 o'clock Saturday [Nov 17] night, following an operation performed Friday for the removal of a tumor on his neck. He had been in failing health several years.
Funeral services will be held at St. John's Lutheran church, of which he was a life-long member, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Melvin H. Meyer, pastor officiating, and burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be removed from the Sawin & Douglass mortuary to the church at 12 o'clock Thursday to lie in state until hour of the services.
Henry August Ode was born at Beverly, Mo., Sept. 25, 1884, the son of Fred and Bettie Ode, and at the age of 2 years, moved with his parents to a farm south of Potter. He attended St. John's parochial school and St. John's Business college at Winfield where he graduated in 1903. That fall he entered the employ of the L.M. Jewell general store and lumber yard, and in 1905 became cashier of the Potter State bank. He continued in that position until the bank was consolidated with the Farmers State bank of Potter, of which he became active vice president.
On May 22, 1907, he married Miss Lillie Poos of Potter, who survives with 5 children: Victor F. Ode, Los Angeles; Mrs. Ray Arnold (Lois), Hays; Mrs. Leonard Engene (Helen), Santa Barbara, Calif.; Mrs. Merle Davis (Alice), 1031 Parallel, Atchison. One daughter, Merle, two sons, Elbert and Robert, preceded him in death. There are five grandchildrean; Annette and Gerald Ode, Los Angeles; Gene Leonard Engene, Santa Barbara; Richard Lee and Sheryl Davis, Atchison. Also surviving are a Brother W.H. Ode, Riverside, Calif.; five uncles, Chris F. and Bente, Riverside; Henry F. Bente, Leavenworth; Henry Ode, route 4, Leavenworth; Henic Ode, East Leavenworth, Mo.; two aunts, Miss Louise Ode and Mrs. P.B. Taschetta, both of Leavenworth; two nieces, Delores Jones and Fawn Marie Jones, who make their home with the Odes.
Mr. Ode was a member of the Potter school board 15 years. He was organist at St. John's church from the age 14 until his health failed, except for the years he was away at school.
In 1940 he took over the Victor Ode hardware store when his son entered defense work, and was still in charge at the time of his death. He had been postmaster the past six years.
