Elmer D. Herbst, 92, of Lake City, MN, died Friday, August 26, 2011 at Mayo Clinic Health System, Lake City Care Center in Lake City, MN.
Elmer Darrell Herbst was born in West Albany Township, Wabasha County. His parents were Arthur John Herbst and Clara Elizabeth (Wilde) Herbst. In 1942 Elmer joined the United States Army. He was decorated with a Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1945. On July 1, 1986 Elmer married Donna Mae Herbst. Elmer was employed by the City of Minneapolis for thirty years working in Maintenance. He also did saw sharpening for ten years in Minneapolis and in Lake City. Elmer moved from Minneapolis to Lake City in 1986 after he and Donna were married. Elmer fully retired in 2007. His hobbies included bowling; he bowled a "299" but never got that "300!" He also enjoyed playing cards, traveling and visiting with family and friends. Elmer was a member of United Methodist Church in Lake City.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Donna Herbst of Lake City, MN; one sister, Francis Burgett of Rochester, MN; one step-son, Michael (Judy) Herbst of Taylor, MI; two step-daughters, Mary (Keith) Boettcher of Rochester, MN and Michelle (Mike) Miller of Mahtomedi, MN; seven step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his second wife, Leona, five sisters, Agnes Pulver, Isabelle Perkins, Louella Stephan, Ethel Rabe and Helen Krause; four brothers, James, August, Clarence and Harry Herbst.
Pallbearers are: Tom Herbst, Keri Herbst, Kristi Herbst, Michael Boettcher, Chad Boettcher, Kim Boettcher and Kaleigh Miller.
