Funeral services were held in St. John's Catholic Church in the Town of Union at eleven o'clock Saturday morning, June 20th. The Reverend James P. Binkowski, pastor of the church, officiated at the funeral services and also at the Bible Vigil which was held in Pichas' Funeral Home here at eight o'clock Friday evening. Burial was in the Wopat Cemetery.

Friends called Picha's Funeral Home after two o'clock Friday afternoon and until ten o'clock Saturday morning.

Bennie Alben Wopat, son of Wencil Wopat and Rose Pocepicky Wopat, was born October 1, 1907 in the Town of Union, Vernon County, Wisconsin. He attended the Wopat School and grew to young manhood in that community.

He was married January 11, 1937 to Miss Rose Sebranek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Sebranek. The wedding ceremony took place in St. John's Catholic Church in the Town of Union (near Dilly).

Mr. and Mrs. Wopat established their home on a farm near Elroy where they resided for about eleven years. They then moved to a farm in the Town of Union (in 1948) and they continued to reside there until February 1, 1970 when they moved to the City of Hillsboro.

Mr. Wopat was a member of St. John's Catholic Church near Dilly and of the St. Christopher Council Knights of Columbus.

Surviving Mr. Wopat are his wife, Mrs. Rose Wopat of Hillsboro; one son, Ben Wopat, Jr. of Cedarburg, Wisconsin; nine daughters, Lou Ann (Mrs. Robert Douglas of Saranac Lake, New York), Sharon (Mrs. Rodney Hisel of Fond du Lac), Barbara (Mrs. Robert Heiking, residing in Iceland where her husband is stationed with the U. S. Navy), Kathryn (Mrs. David Schell of 4512 Camden Road, Madison), Joan (Mrs. Gilbert Symons of La Crosse), Miss Margaret Wopat of 321 Hamilton Street, Madison, Mary (Mrs. Lamont Schroeder of Tomah), and Miss Cecile Wopat and Miss Theresa Wopat, at home; twelve grandchildren; six sisters, Mrs. Lena Cisar of Middleton, Helen (Mrs. Joseph Stanek of New Richmond), Rose (Mrs. Richard Hynek of Yuba), Mrs. Martha Sinkule of rural Wonewoc, Mrs. Agnes Hynek of rural Hillsboro and Mrs. Alice Miller of Mauston; five brothers, William of Elroy, Joseph of Union Center, Adolph of Kendall, Rudolph of Genoa and Raymond of Milwaukee; many other relatives and numerous friends. He was preceded in death by one daughter and one son, both of whom passed away in infancy; and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wencil Wopat.

The death of Mr. Wopat, who was a member of a prominent pioneer family of this locality, has brought much sorrow to many people throughout this area where he had a wide acquaintanceship and enjoyed the high esteem and good will of a very large number of persons.

He was a very kindly man of pleasant personality who was always thoughtful of others and who was genuinely concerned with the welfare and happiness of all people.

He will be especially remembered for his great devotion to his family, for his sincerity in faith and his loyalty to the precepts of his church and the many ways in which he generously contributed to the success of many worthy projects and the progress of the community.

The memory of his many kindnesses, his devotion to his family, allegiance in faith, enduring friendship and true neighborliness will always be treasured as a most valued legacy in remembrance by all who have been so greatly bereaved by his death. --"The Hillsboro Sentry-Enterprise," Thursday, June 25, 1970
