Peter Leonard -- PA
John Peter Leonard was born in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of Valentine & Elizabeth (Wallacher) Leonard. His father was a tailor in Philadelphia for many years. "Peter", as he was known, was baptized at the First Reformed Church of Philadelphia on Mar. 14, 1748. He married about 1773 in PA to Barbara Hege, daughter of John Jacob Hege. Their children were Valentine, Michael, and two daughters.
Peter Leonard, his father, and four of his brothers all served in the Revolutionary War. He served as a private with the Northampton Militia in PA, and he took the Oath of Allegiance in PA. He also served as a teamster between Bethlehem, PA, and Abbott's Creek in NC, using his team of horses and wagon for the Revolutionary War effort.
Family stories say he was a friend of Daniel Boone and that it was Daniel who persuaded him to move to Kentucky. They settled around the Mason County area. About 1785, while living in this area, the family was attacked by Indians. The house was burned to the ground. Peter and his wife were killed. The two daughters and one son were captured by the Indians. It is believed that one daughter married an Indian and lived with them the rest of her life. The other daughter was eventually released and married a man named Logan. She and her husband moved to Oxford, IN. The son, Valentine, was returned from captivity during an exchange of Indian prisoners for white captives. He married Mary "Polly" Fowler and moved to Vermillion County, IL.
