Obituary: Dr. Imre Illes, 88, died Oct. 7 in Lake Forest Hospital. Born in Miskolc, Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen, Hungary, Dr. Illes graduated from the University of Vienna in 1938 and came to the U.S. in 1939. After an internship at St. Mary's Hospital in Quincy, Ill., he established a family practice in Atkinson, Ill. Later he came to Chicago's Michael Reese Hospital for specialty training in anesthesia and became one of the first board-certified anesthesiologists in 1956. He was chairman /director of the Anesthesiology Department of Grant Hospital in Chicago from 1966 until his retirement in 1987. His passion for swimming made him an avid follower of the Lake Forest High School swim and water polo teams. He was a member of the Lake Forest International Club.
He is survived by his wife Linda nee Hansen; son Terry (Louise) of Orem, Utah; daughters Erica (John) Baccus of San Francisco, Judith (Dr. Keith Mausner) Illes of Eagle, Wis. and daughter-in-law Sigrid (the late James) Illes of San Jose, Calif; stepsons Mitchell (Lisa) Moore of Lake Forest and Scott (Dawn) Moore of Chicago; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Renate nee Gingold and by his son James. Visitation was held Oct. 9 at Wenban Funeral Home, Lake Forest. Funeral service and interment were private. Memorials may be made to the Lake Forest High School swim program or to the U.S. Holocaust Museum, c/o Highland Park Office, P.O. Box 1852, Highland Park, IL 60035.
