Major E. G. Niklaus has had a new stone front built in his family vault in Springdale Cemetery. The work was done by James H. Crozier.

Madison, Ind., February 23.--The flag is at halfmast, owing to the death of Edwin C. Nicklaus, ex-postmaster, who died of pneumonia to-day after a brief illness. He was a wholesale grocer and a member of the Pythians, Elks and Firemen's fraternal associations. He served as major of the Fourth Indiana Regiment, U.R., K. of P., and he leaves a widow and one adult son.

Major E. G. Niklaus died at his home in Madison the first of the week from an attack of pneumonia. The funeral will occur today.

There was a family vault ("Niklaus or Nicklaus") vault on Lots 172-173 in Plat 2 on the hillside which no longer exists. Pieces of it can be found in the woods to the east of the lots. It is not known if the vault collapsed or was removed. The inscriptions were transcribed about 1941 when the DAR transcribed the cemetery. As of this date (Sept 24, 2011) no markers can be located of the family members that were once interred within the family vault.

Gravesite Details

This vault was removed because of disrepair. No evidence can be found of relocated burials. The remnants of the vault are located in the wooded area to the east of the original site.
