FORT WORTH - Stanley Eugene Wilson, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006.

Stan, the youngest of four children of Frank Martin Wilson and Lucy Clark Wilson, was born in Lovilia, Iowa, on Jan. 26, 1916, and grew up in Grinnell, Iowa. In 1940, he married Christine Smith of Fort Worth after graduating from Texas Christian University, where he was a cheerleader, a member of Whos Who in American Colleges and Universities and senior class president.
During World War II, he served in the amphibious forces as a communications officer for a landing craft infantry group of the 7th Fleet. Later promoted to chief staff officer of the LCI flotilla, he was discharged in 1945 as a Navy lieutenant.
After the war, he returned to a 35-year career in broadcasting with the Texas State Network, serving in both radio and TV managerial positions in Waco, McAllen and Amarillo. In 1955, he was brought to Fort Worth as manager to launch KFJZ-TV. In 1965, he became president of a partnership that purchased KFJZ AM/FM and the rights to the Texas State Network name. Under his leadership, the radio network grew to over 100 stations and held exclusive radio rights to carry Dallas Cowboys football. He was also co-owner of radio stations KEYS in Corpus Christi and WNOR in Norfolk, Va.
During his career, Stan taught classes at Baylor and TCU and served on many broadcasting-related boards until his retirement in 1975. His list of broadcasting awards includes Texas Association Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year, the Betty Award, the Golden Mike Award, the Abe Lincoln Award and, most recently, his induction into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2002.
Stan was active in a variety of civic affairs: Literacy Council, Camp Fire Girls, Fort Worth Park and Recreation Board and Crime Stoppers, to name a few. For 23 years, he was on the Fort Worth Goodwill Industries board and was the first chairman of the Mayor's Council on Youth Opportunity. He was a member of University Christian Church, Colonial Country Club, Frog Club, Quinq Club and the TCU Alumni Association.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Smith Wilson, in 2002.
