Stanley F. Hoppes, 74, of Ionia, formerly of Portland, died Friday, February 23, 1996. He was born December 9, 1921, the son of Bernard and Pauline (Lehman) Hoppes.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army and received the EAME ribbon with one silver battle star, five bronze stars, five overseas bars, one service stripe and the Good Conduct Ribbon.

He was Ionia County's 1,000th World War II veteran to have his service record recorded at the County Courthouse.

He is survived by three daughters: Trixie Wood, Kendra Hoppes and Belinda Hoppes, all of Lansing; three sons; Karl of Converse, Texas, Edward, of Portland, and Michael Hoppes, of Lansing; many grandchildren; brothers Bernard Hoppes Jr., of Portland and Leon Hoppes, of Eaton Rapids, and three sisters; Ruth Keusch, of Portland, Eleanor Lynch, of Lansing and Marilyn Muirhead, of San Antonio, Texas.

Funeral services were held Yesterday at the Gorsline-Runciman Co., Neller Chapel in Portland with Fr. Julian Reginato officiating. Interment followed in Danby Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by Portland V.F.W. Post 4090.
