His record in the War Between the States reads:

REECE, CALVIN L., Private, Company B, 42nd Regiment N.C. Troops. Resided in Catawba County where he enlisted at age 28, January 28, 1862. Present or accounted for until captured at or near Sugar Loaf, near Fort Fisher, on or about January 19, 1865. Confined at or near Fort Monroe, Virginia, January 25, 1865. Transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware, where he arrived on February 11, 1865. Released at Fort Delaware on June 19, 1865, after taking the Oath of Allegiance. [North Carolina pension records indicate he received a powder burn on the face at Salisbury in May, 1862.]
