Agnes Leona Hofland, 89, was born on Sept. 6, 1922 in Butler Township to Raymond and Elizabeth VandenBerghe. She grew up on the family farm with her three sisters and one adopted brother. The family attended Holy Cross Church where her Catholic faith became the cornerstone of her life. She went to the local country school through the eighth grade. In January of 1944 she joined the United States Army and served for two years. The first year was spent in Casper, Wyo. where she was in charge of doing flight plans. She then was transferred to Yuma, Ariz. where she checked personnel in and out of base. After her honorable discharge she went back home to Butler. Before Agnes was married, she and her sister Blanche and a neighbor friend did an extended tour of the western United States in a Ford Model A. In 1950, she was married to Peter Edward Hofland at Holy Cross Church, Butler. They made their home on the farm located about one mile north of Butler. Agnes was a devoted mom, homemaker and farmwife, and filled any other role that came up. They moved from the farm in 1982 to the new house they built just a quarter mile south of the farm. There she enjoyed living in the country close to most of her children for many years. After being diagnosed with Alzheimer's, Agnes lived at her home with family care and support for about eight years until her needs became greater. Her temporary home was at the Golden Manor in Detroit Lakes. At 1:42 P.M. on Sept. 21, Jesus and the angels took her soul to her eternal home.

Agnes's hobbies and interests included reading, flower and vegetable gardening, growing fruit trees, sewing, collecting Precious Moments figurines, and traveling. She was involved with 4-H as a youth, then as an adult leader. Babies and little children always held a special spot in her heart. One of the things she perfected was making angel food cake with 7-minute frosting from scratch. That was the "birthday cake" for all birthdays in the family so she had many opportunities to perfect it. Since Agnes' two sisters and parents lived in Forest Grove, Ore., she was able to take the train a number of times for visits before her own parents died. After all the children graduated and moved away from home, she was able to take extended visits to Oregon and Florida to stay with her sisters and their families. In 1981 she was able to take the trip of her dreams to the Holy Land with her daughter, Gloria; her sister, Adeline; and Adeline's daughter, Carolyn. She was also was blessed with numerous trips to visit Gloria and her family in eight different states in which they lived.

Agnes is survived by her husband, Peter Edward Hofland, New York Mills; daughters, Nancy Anne (Henry) Imsande, Bemidji, Minn., Mary Anne (Ronald) Linden, Rocher, Minn., Susan Elizabeth (Daryl) Ruther, Richville and Gloria Marie (Daniel) Ziegler, Ceresco, Mich.; sons, James Edward (Jayne) Hofland, New York Mills, Paul Stephen Hofland, Bemidji, Mark Patrick (Michelle) Hofland, New York Mills, Stephen Michael (Glenda) Hofland, New York Mills and David Michael (Sally) Hofland, New York Mills; 24 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; many other relatives and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Elizabeth VandenBerghe; and Bernard and Adeline (sister) Feeney, Francis and Luella (sister) Evers, and Blanche Peters (sister).

Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills.
