Born Dec. 31, 1935, in Mitchell County, N.C., he was the son of the late Mary H. King Phillips and John W. Phillips. He was the husband of Joan A. Blauvelt Phillips, his wife of 49 years.

He retired from the Air Force, serving as a Master Sergeant for 20 years. He also worked for Lowes for 11 years. He was a life-time member of the VFW Legion Post No. 467 where he was in the pool league; the Moose Lodge No. 1381, American Legion Post. No. 31 and the Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 46 AF & AM, where he was a 50-year master mason. He was also a member of Quail Valley Golf Course and former member of Piney Branch Golf Club.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are daughters Nancy Lee Rudolph, of Jamestown, N.C., and Teresia Gale Montague, of Herndon, Va.; a sister, Sharon Raborg and husband Joe Jr., of Baltimore; grandchildren Matthew, Courtney and Brandon; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Phillips; and a sister, Betty Peacock.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Fletcher Funeral Home, 254 E. Main St., Westminster, where the Door to Virtue Masonic Lodge No. 46 AF & AM will conduct a service at 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Kristin Dubsky officiating. Interment will be in St. John's (Leister's) Cemetery with military honors.
