Virgil Rowe Deane, who shot the photograph of Mama and Papa Gustafson printed on Gustafson's Dairy milk cartons for decades, died Friday from a heart condition. He was 84. A native of Mount Airy, North Carolina, who lived in Neptune Beach for more than 55 years, was a professional photographer whose milk carton photo taken 46 years ago is the most reproduced photo in the area, said his son, Bobby Deane.

Mr. Deane was instrumental in getting the Beaches Area Historical Society started and was the founder and president of the Professional Photographers Association of Northeast Florida. He also founded the Beaches Rotary Club. He taught others the art of photography at Florida Community College at Jacksonville and Jacksonville University.

In addition to his son, Mr. Deane is survived by his wife, Lessie Deane; three other sons, Stephen Virgil Deane of Jacksonville Beach, Ron Murray of Tampa and Perry Murray of Dallas; three daughters, Bettie Goodloe and Rita Blackmar of Jacksonville Beach and Barbara Chappen of Tampa; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside services are scheduled at 11 a.m. today at H. Warren Smith Cemetery in Jacksonville Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring, Jacksonville, Florida.
