World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Redbrook, Flintshire, Wales, he served as a Captain in the Royal Navy. At Narvik, Norway, on April 10, 1940, Captain Warburton-Lee was on his ship the H.M.S Hardy during a snowstorm, in command of a convoy of five destroyers. His convoy was attacked several German destroyers and supply ships, but allies were initially very successful in landing, when German reinforcements arrived. During the repel of the fight, a shell hit the bridge of HMS Hardy and Captain Warburton-Lee was mortally wounded and died in this action. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was the first recipient awarded the Victoria Cross in World II and posthumously on June 7, 1940.
