John was born in Kuteickofen, Switzerland, on March 30,1846, the son of Daniel & Elizabeth Kissner, the only son in a family of five children. After his education there was completed, John took up teaching, becoming a teacher of voice. He was known as "Singing John".
In 1868, at the age of 22, he and five other young men came to this country, and arrived in Warsaw on a Saturday night, staying at the home of a cousin, Nicholas Kissner.
He became a naturalized citizen and was a member of the Darling Run church.
He was married in 1875 to Barbara Fischer, and to this union were born seven children:

Mrs. Carl Myers of Warsaw

Everett of Coshocton county
