Anna Marie Stutz Bethscheider

Anna Marie Stutz was born on January 8, 1836, in Germany. She married Nicholas Bethscheider December 1851, in Butler County, Pa., coming to Hebron in about 1872 with her husband and family. Children born to this union were: Stephen, born 1856; Adolph, born 1857; Andrew, born in 1861; Alphonse, born in 1862; John, born in 1864; Josephine, born in 1868; Catherine, and Anna, born in 1874. Nor record can be found of Catherine's birth date.

Grandmother Stutz lived with them, but within a few years of their arrival at Hebron, five had passed away: Anna 1874, Grandma Stutz 1877, Josephine 1868, John 1882, and Catherine, no record of exact date.

Anna took in washings, earning $90.00, which was used to buy the first cemetery lots. This was later donated to the parish and is the original Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Mrs. Bethscheider took in boarders and roomers to help with the expenses of their family. She always boarded priests or other visitors who came to Hebron. Also, she did weaving.

Anna went to Wisconsin and brought one niece and four nephews to Hebron following the death of their parents. She was a mother to them and raised them in her home.

Besides all of this, she still found time to help and devote much time to her Church. It is said she is remembered as one of the foremost builders of the parish because her husband and family followed her example in working so hard to get the parish established.

Anna was a member of the first choir at Sacred Heart, served as the first president of the Altar society and held this office sixteen years. She was truly a build of the parish. She passed away Feb. 24, 1897. Many of her descendants are still members of Sacred Heart. She was known as the Angel of Hospitality and charity."
