☆~ VETERAN, WORLD WAR I (1914-1918) ~☆

Funeral services for Edward C. Wagner of Oakdale were held at the Methodist Church in Oakdale Saturday, July 18.

The Rev Connie Buehler officiated at the service and interment was made at the Oakdale Cemetery. Earl Henry McNare was organist for Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Schwarting singing “23rd Psalm” and “How Great Thou Art.” Serving as pallbearers were his nephews Ralph Wagner, Lewis Wagner, Elmer Wagner, Earl Wagner, Irven Wagner and Clarence Wagner.

Edward C. Wagner, son of Julius and Louise Wagner, was born at Dewey, Ill., on December 15, 1878 and died at the Veterans Hospital in Grand Island, July 15 at the age of 91 years and seven months. He was the youngest of eight children and was the last surviving member.

As a small boy he moved with his parents to Antelope County, settling on a farm in St. Clair Valley. Later the family moved to a farm one mile south of Oakdale which was his home most of his life. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.

A graduate from the Oakdale High School in 1903, he attended Fremont Normal School and the University of Nebraska. He taught rural school for several years.

He enlisted in the Army in World War I and served in France for a lengthy period of time. During World War II, he worked in the ship yards at Astoria, Oregon.

He was a member of Lebanon Lodge No. 323, A. F. and A. M. of Columbus. His last three years were spent in the Veterans Home at Grand Island.
