OBIT- Wednesday 22 February 1893 THE WATERTOWN NEWS, Watertown, Wisconsin
David J Zimdars, a man who had reached the remarkable age of nearly 97 years, died at the home of his son, Julius Zimdars, in the town of Concord, Saturday last, 18 February 1893.
Deceased was born in Pomerania, Germany, 28 April 1796. He emigrated to the United States in 1843, coming to this place, and the same year settled in Concord, which continued his home up to the time of his death.
He was married three times, but has no wife living. Ten children survive him.
The great age this man had attained can be better realized by making some historical comparisons. When the Prussians were defeated by the French at the battle of Jena, Zimdars was a boy of over 10 years of age. At the time of the battle of Wagram, resulting in a victory of the French over the Austrians, fought July 5 and 6, 1809, Zimdars was a lad in his 14th year. He must have had a vivid remembrance of the bloody battle of Leipsic, October 16-19, 1913, where the French were routed with great slaughter, being at that time over 17 years old. When Waterloo, one of the great decisive battles of the world was fought 18 June 1915, Zimdars was a young man in his 20th year. Napolean died at St Helena, May 1821, Zimdars at this time being in his 26th year, and yet he lived long enough after this event to vote at our presidential election of 1892.
