Henry Gossman, 80, Effingham died at 10 p.m. yesterday at the Atchison hospital after suffering a fractured hip and shoulder Saturday in a fall at Cray Senior Manor.
Mr. Gossman, father of Mrs. Gale (Darlene) Ball, route 1, assistant secretary-treasurer of the Globe Publishing Co., and business office manager for the Globe, had been in failing health 15 years.
He had been a patient at the Leavenworth Veterans Administration Center, Medicalodge of Atchison and at other nursing homes during his long illness.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Sawin-Dyer chapel with the Rev. Walter Brant, pastor of the United Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster cemetery.
American Legion Post No. 6 will conduct the flag folding ceremony at the grave. Members of the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Sawin-Dyer Mortuary where friends may call after 4 p.m. today.
Mr. Gossman was born Dec. 28, 1894, at Alma Neb., worked for the Missouri Pacific railroad at Falls City and in 1928 moved to the Bean Lake area.
He engaged in farming at Bean Lake and worked here in the 1920s in helping construct the Pillsbury Mill, and in the 1930s moved to the Atchison area.
Mr. Gossman farmed in the Lancaster community the last 10 years before his retirement 11 years ago and moving to Effingham.
His wife Sylvia Gossman, died Jan. 16, 1973.
Mr. Gossman was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist church and was a member of Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post No. 6.
He was a veteran of World War I and served in the infantry in France.
Surviving are four daughter, Mrs. Gale (Darlene) ball, route 1, Atchison, Mrs. Gerald (Edna) Baker, Whiting, Mrs. Donald (Donna) Chambers, Prattville, Ala., and Mrs. Wallace Fisk, route 3, Atchison; a stepson, Marvin Hammond, route 3, Atchison; one brother, Paul Gossman, Alma Neb.; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Moritz, Falls City, and Mrs. Zinnia Drilling and Mrs. Charles (Minnie) Workman, both of Humboldt, Neb.; 16 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
