Topeka Banker Weidling Dies

Frederick Guild "Ted" Weidling, senior vice president of First National Bank and former chairman of the Washburn University Board of Regents, died early Saturday at his home, 1701 MacVicar. He was 59.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at a Topeka hospital. Cause of death was not announced.

He was born July 22, 1915, at Topeka, the son of Walter H. and Mildred Guild Weidling. His father was a prominent Topeka physician and his mother was the daughter of George A. Guild, who for many years was chairman of the board of the Central National Bank of Topeka.

Mr. Weidling was graduated from Topeka High School in 1933 and attended Washburn University from 1933 to 1935. He was graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree from Harvard University in 1938. While at Washburn he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the Naval Reserve in the South Pacific. He was discharged in the fall of 1945 as a lieutenant.

He began his banking career in 1938 at the central National Bank.
In 1953 he was elected vice president of Central National Bank and also served as a member of the board of directors.
The National Bank of Topeka and the Central National consolidated Sept. 20, 1957 and became the First National Bank. Mr. Weidling served as vice president and a director of the newly formed bank and in 1968 was promoted to senior vice president.

Mr. Weidling began his service as a member of the Washburn University Board of Regents in July, 1949, and served in every capacity on the board until June, 1970, when he left the board.
He also was active in the Washburn University Alumni Assn.

He was immediate past president of the board of trustees of Stormont-Vail Hospital, serving in that capacity from 1969 to 1971. he had served on the hospital board more than 20 years and was a trustee at the time of his death.

He was appointed Shawnee County savings bond chairman in 1958, and received the U.S. Treasury Dept.'s 25th Anniversary citation for patriotic volunteer service in 1966.
Mr. Weilding headed the Red Cross drive in 1949 and later became chairman of the Shawnee County chapter of the Red Cross following the flood of 1951.
He was a former board member of Kansas Bankers Surety Co. and Crosby Bros. Inc. of Topeka.
He was a member of First Congregational Church, Topeka Chamber of Commerce, a member, former director and president of Topeka County Club.
He was former treasurer of the Shawnee County Tuberculosis Assn. and former member of the Youth Center Organization of Topeka. He was a former member of the Rotary Club of Topeka.

He was married Dec. 7, 1940, to Betty Jane Warren at Topeka. She survives. Her father, Frank J. Warren, is a former mayor of Topeka.
Other survivors include two sons, Frank Carl Weidling at home and Frederick Warren Weidling, Prairie Village; and a sister, Mrs. Louise Cook, Lawrence.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Weidling will lie in state from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at Wall-Diffenderfer Mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made to Washburn University or to Stormont-Vail Hospital.
