She was baptized on July 27, 1905, and confirmed on July 27, 1919. She was a devoted Christian and dedicated her life to her family and to St. John's Lutheran Church in Poth. For more than 23 years, she and her family lived in Saspamco, where her husband, Paul Ermler, supervised one of the largest sewer-pipe factories in the nation. She later supported her husband through his terms serving as sheriff of Wilson County in the late 1940s and early 1950s. She was a schoolteacher in the Labatt and Ehlers schools, worked at Sears and Roebuck, and retired after many years of service caring for and nursing patients at Grace Lutheran and Wilson Memorial hospitals. Leona was an avid bridge player and especially enjoyed serving as a host to her friends and family. Her poppy seed, apricot, and prune coffee cake were really good, like no other. She was a fine lady and a strong disciplinarian, keeping everyone in line. For the past year, she was a resident of Personalized Care Inc. in Shiner
Preceded in death by her husband, Paul Ermler; two brothers and a sister; a son, son-in-law, and second husband, A.B. Ward.
Survived by her daughter, sister-in-law, nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation was Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 3-5:30 p.m., in the Franklin Funeral Home in Floresville. A prayer service was Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St. John's Lutheran Church in Poth.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m. on Thursday in St. John's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Ted Steenblock and the Rev. Dr. Thomas A. Damrow officiating. Interment followed in St. John's Cemetery in Poth.
