Karl Persson was a native of Malmo, Sweden and came to the US, settling in Washington County, IL and becoming a US citizen in 1876.

Karl was a millwright by trade and built mills in several towns in Washington County, IL: Venedy, Darmstadt, and New Minden. While in Venedy he met Johanna Margaretha Elizabeth Twenhafel and married at the St. Salvator Lutheran Church April 4, 1875.

After finishing the mill in Venedy, he and Margaretha moved to nearby Darmstadt to work on another mill. While in Darmstadt, their first son, Henry Ludwig was born in 1877.

When the Darmstadt mill was finished they moved to New Minden to build another mill. While there, their next son, Gustav was born in 1878 and Adolph three years later in 1881.

The dust from the milling profession was detrimental to Karl's health and thinking farming would be better, bought a farm near Hoyleton, IL which he ran until his death in 1882. He is buried in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Hoyleton.
