Elizabeth (nee Foster) Barnard, whose slate stele has a curly-haired, winged effigy of the primitive portrait type, was the first wife of Ebenezer Barnard. One of eleven children, she was born c.1694-95 to James Foster and his second wife, the former Anna Lane, and married Mr. Barnard on February 29, 1715-16. The couple consequently became the parents of nine children: sons Joseph, Ebenezer Jr., Samuel, *Abner, Selah, and Lemuel, and daughters Anna, Rebecca Barnard Saxton, and Elizabeth Barnard Frary. Two of the children, who died before reaching adulthood, are buried nearby: Ebenezer Jr., who died at age 17, and Anna, who died at age 11. Mrs. Bernard, who was in her 59th at the time of her death, predeceased her husband by almost 11 years. He died in Hadley, Massachusetts, on July 20, 1764 "in ye 68th year of his age".

*Abner Barnard, (1724-1797) who died of smallpox on his 73rd birthday, is buried in Bridge Street Cemetery in Northampton, MA)
