John was an heir to the North West fur trading company founded by his uncle, Simon MacTavish. He served as British Consul to the State of Maryland.

Son of Alexander MacTavish and Marjory Fraser. Married Emily Jane Caton.

Children:
1. Charles Carroll MacTavish (1819-1868); married Marcella Scott, daughter of General Winfield Scott.
2. Mary Wellesley MacTavish (1823-1850); married Henry George Howard, youngest son of the Duke of Carlisle.
3. Alexander Simon MacTavish (1829-1863); married Ellen Gilmor (her second husband was Dr. George Halsted Boylan).
4. Richard Caton MacTavish (1831-1841).
