Irene C. Kerstein, 88, of 419 Lincoln Ave., formerly of 81 Market St., Zwingle, Iowa, died at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, of natural causes.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing, Iowa.

Irene was born on Dec. 28, 1922, in Dubuque, daughter of Nathan and Margaret (McGuire) Kelly.

She married Charlie A. Kerstein on Feb. 13, 1941, in Waukon, Iowa; he preceded her in death in Nov. 23, 1971.

Irene was a full-time wife, mother and homemaker, and also worked at Dubuque Health Care Center as a cook for 22 years.

She was a member of the Eagles Club.

Irene enjoyed putting together puzzles, doing crossword puzzles and watching TV. She loved to cook, bake, garden and eat ice cream. She helped people whenever she was able. Her greatest joy was to spend time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving are three daughters, Alice (Ernest) Thoma, of St. Donatus, Iowa, Mary (Francis) Thoma, of Dubuque, and Laurie Ostrander, of Zwingle; three sons, William (Diane) Kerstein and Charles Kerstein, both of East Dubuque, Ill., and Thomas Kerstein, of Dubuque; 22 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marie Johnson; three brothers, Harold, B.J. and Merle Kelly; and grandsons, Ernest Thoma and Billy Kerstein Jr.
