Sylvester Edward Diegel, age 100 of St. Clair Shores died Monday, November 7, 2011 at Shorepointe Nursing Center.

On February 21, 1911 Edward and Matilda (nee: Faye) Diegel had a baby boy they named Sylvester who resided with his parents and siblings Leo, Esther, Eugene, and Florence at the family owned grocery store located in the City of Detroit. Tragically, Sylvester's mother passed away unexpectedly in 1918 leaving Sylvester and his siblings without a mother and Edward without a wife. In order to keep the family together and provide the proper supervision for his children, Edward sold the grocery store and moved the household to a farm in Washington Township where the family provided sustenance and income for itself by farming the fertile Macomb County soil. Sylvester and his siblings attended the Davis School in Washington Township until such time as they were needed to work the farm full-time. Sylvester continued to work the family and neighboring farms full-time until he attained the age of 23 at which time he left farming and went to work for the Cadillac Motor Car Company in Detroit.

Sylvester married Catherine Salter on October 19, 1940 and settled with his new bride in Harper Woods, Michigan until 1951 when they moved their young family to the City of Detroit and raised their three children: Edward, David, and Mary. Mr. Diegel met his beautiful wife while serving as an usher at Guardian Angels Church in Detroit. They later married on October 19, 1940. After his retirement with the gas company in 1976 he found a few hobbies to keep himself and his wife busy. Mr. Diegel along Catherine always believed in giving back to their community by volunteering. They were both great supporters for their children along with the "Meals on Wheels" program. Sylvester also became very active with the K of C and the programs that they were involved with. He was even awarded Knight of the year for participating in the volunteer programs.

Mr. Diegel loved to enjoy watching a good game of Detroit Tigers Baseball in his spare time. If he wasn't in front of the television he could be found out in the garden tending to his perfect vegetables. No one could grow vegetables like Mr. Diegel! He was a family man that loved to tell all who would listen about his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He has distinguished himself not only for attaining the age of one hundred years but also for being the best husband, father and grandfather a family could hope for and by providing superb examples of the virtues of kindness, humility and integrity for all who have come to know and admire him.

Mr. Diegel was the beloved husband of the late Catherine Diegel and the loving father of Edward (Kathy) Diegel, David (Mary Jo) Diegel, and Mary (Bernard) Borowski. Mr. Diegel is also the cherished grandfather of Debbie Diegel, Jennifer Diegel, Jeffrey Diegel, Emma (Jason) Kelley, Chris Borowski, Lisa Borowski, Julia Diegel, and great-grandfather of Danielle, Aidan, Gracie, and great great grandfather of Lucas.

Visitation for Mr. Diegel will be held Wednesday from 3-9pm at the D.S. Temrowski and Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Rd. at Common (12 ½ mile), with a 7pm Rosary Service. Mr. Diegel will lie in state 10 am Thursday at St. Donald Catholic Church until the time of the Funeral Mass 10:30am. Celebrating the Funeral Liturgy will be Rev. Fr. Michael Donovan. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorial donations are appreciated to Community Opportunity Center, 33150 Schoolcraft Suite 104 • Livonia, MI 48150.
