Born in Providence, R.I., on Oct. 9, 1925, he was the son of the late Earle Seymour Gardner and Blanche B.E. (Ploof/King) Gardner. He was the husband of the late Dale Leach Gardner.
Mr. Gardner was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was stationed in Pensacola, Fla. He managed Argonne Jewelry in Providence until his retirement in 1990. He was a longtime resident of Warwick. He was descended from old Yankee stock and from two Mayflower passengers. The first Gardner in the line settled in Newport in 1639. He loved movies, dancing, crossword puzzles, writing and watching the Red Sox. He was the father of Roberta A. Dickenson of Warwick and Brenda M. Celona of Cranston Lynda J. Rego and her husband, Al, of Bristol; Garth Gardner and his wife, Loida, of St. Augustine, Fla.; Jessica Bevilacqua and her husband, Jeff, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and Erik W. Gardner and his wife, Trish, of Cranston; He had five grandchildren, Garrett, Olivia and Jake Gardner and Chelsey and Justin Dickenson. He was the brother of the late Dorothea F. Anderson. A military service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at the R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter. Friends and family are invited to attend. Arrangements are with Winfield & Sons Funeral Home in North Scituate.
