John Toben, 84, of Akron, died Sunday (Sept. 27, 1987) at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron. The Rev. Benard Nelson officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery under direction of the Schroeder Funeral home of Akron. Visitation was held Tuesday night at the funeral home. Pallbearers were Harlyn Dewey, Marvin Toben, Gene Toben, Michael Hasenbank, Patrick Toben and David Hasenbank. Tim Kelley, soloist, sang "How Great Thou Art" and "Beyond The Sunset". Carol Harris was organist.

Mr. Toben was born Aug. 9, 1903, at Akron, to Karl and Gara Jensen Toben. He attended the Toben country school. He married Gladys Albright Dec. 30, 1932, in Elk Point, S.D. They farmed in the Westfield area until 1965 when they retired and moved to Westfield. They moved to Akron in 1971. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church in Akron.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur (Joyce) Hasenbank; two sons, Darrell and Martin, both of Westfield; a half sister, Amelia Dewey of Akron; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Vernon and Dwight; two grandsons, Brian Hasenbank and Joseph Toben; two brothers, Martin and Carl; two sisters, Katie Toben and Clara Warnsing, and half brothers and Sisters.
