He was the owner of Hathaway Knitting Mills in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He served as an Ensign aboard the U.S. Battleship "Florida" during World War I. He received a commission when his father donated a yacht to the Government for reconnaissance.

He is the son of James Everett and Mary Thomas (Cook) Stanton. He married Priscilla Beacham on November 21, 1917 in Norfolk Virginia. Marriage ended in divorce. He remarried in 1938.
