James J. Helbig, a retired investigator in the Missouri attorney general's office and a former Missouri state fire marshal, passed away on Friday, Feb. 21, 1997, of lung cancer at his daughter's home in Weldon Spring. He was 69 and had lived in Jefferson City since 1977. Mr. Helbig was born and reared in St. Louis and served in the Navy in World War II.

Mr. Helbig, formerly of St. Louis, began his career in 1951 as a St. Louis firefighter. In 1959, he became chief of the Crestwood Fire Department. After serving for several years as St. Louis County fire marshal, he returned to his position as Crestwood fire chief, serving until 1974. After that, he was Missouri state fire marshal for eight years before he became an investigator for the Missouri attorney general's office, a position he held until he retired in 1993.

Among the survivors are his wife, La Verne Helbig; four daughters, Pat Loeffel of Webster Groves, Susan Collins of St. Charles, Linda Fragale of south St. Louis County and Nancy Tracy of Hazelwood; seven sons, Jim Helbig of Jefferson City, Mike Helbig of Jefferson County, Tom Helbig of Kirkwood, Bob Helbig of O'Fallon, MO, John Helbig of Fenton, Greg Helbig of Maplewood and Larry Helbig of South County; a brother, Robert Helbig of Mehlville; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 PM on Sunday at Kutis Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois Road, Affton. A funeral service will be celebrated at 12:15 PM on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
