Screenwriter and Composer. Wrote songs for the final editions of The Ziegfeld Follies. While at Universal in the mid-1940s, he wrote the Abbott and Costello comedies. Later, he worked on the Olsen and Johnson movies "Ghost Catchers" (1944) and "See My Lawyer" (1945). He went on to co-write such Bob Hope films as "The Paleface" (1948), "Sorrowful Jones" (1949), "Fancy Pants" (1950), "The Lemon Drop Kid" (1951) and "Here Come the Girls" (1953). Wrote and produced television series such as "The Eve Arden Show" (1957) and "The Smith Family" (1971). Served as national chairman of the Writers Guild of America in the mid-1960s. The Guild presented Hartmann with the Morgan Cox award in 1985. He was awarded the Golden Chili Award for Lifetime Achievement in 1999 by the Santa Fe Film Critics Circle.
