James Delmore Cooke, 84, of Grants Pass died Wednesday, April 20, 2005, at his daughter's home. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hull & Hull Funeral Directors. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Cemetery in Cave Junction, with Patrice Robichaux, pastor, officiating.


Contributions may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526. Cooke was born July 21, 1920, in Entiat, Wash. He moved to the Illinois Valley from Washington in 1933 and graduated from Kerby Union High School in 1937. He worked as a logger and also mined for gold, chrome and nickel. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing chess, horseshoes and cribbage.


Survivors include three daughters, Nellie Wildey of Grants Pass, LaVeeta Bailey of Medford and Tru Mary Kamps [step daughter] of Missoula, Mont.; a [step]son, Alfred Kamps of Rogue River; a brother, Ellsworth Cooke of Grants Pass; a sister, Gladys Fattig of Willow Creek, Calif.; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.


A son, James Cooke Jr. died in 1993, and his companion of more than 25 years, Charlotte McGuire, died in 2002.
